Can Customers See the True Color of Your Products?

Retail lighting does more than make products visible. It decides whether customers see the colors, textures, and finishes that make a product worth buying.

Another shopper compares two paint samples but cannot confidently see the difference between their undertones.

A beautifully packaged product looks dull on the shelf, even though its colors appeared rich and vibrant online.

These may seem like merchandising problems, but the lighting could be responsible.

Retail lighting does more than make products visible. It affects how accurately customers see colors, textures, finishes, and small details. When the light distorts those qualities, shoppers may hesitate, choose the wrong item, or leave without buying anything at all.

Color Accuracy Builds Customer Confidence

Customers want to trust what they see.

They need to know that the clothing, cosmetics, furniture, artwork, food, or merchandise they purchase will look the same after they leave the store. If colors appear different at home, customers may feel disappointed even when there is nothing wrong with the product itself.

Accurate lighting helps shoppers distinguish between similar colors and notice the details that make a product special.

It can reveal:

  • The true undertone of a fabric
  • The richness of wood and leather
  • The finish of jewelry and metal
  • The natural appearance of skin and cosmetics
  • The freshness of food and produce
  • The subtle differences between paint and material samples

When customers can clearly evaluate a product, they can make decisions with greater confidence.

Start With the Color Rendering Index

The Color Rendering Index, commonly called CRI, measures how naturally colors appear under a light source when compared with a reference source.

The scale runs from 0 to 100. A higher number generally indicates more accurate color rendering.

For many commercial spaces, a CRI of 80 may provide acceptable general illumination. Retail environments often benefit from a CRI of 90 or higher, especially when color plays an important role in the buying decision.

However, the overall CRI number does not tell the entire story.

Traditional CRI calculations are based on a limited group of pastel test colors. A light source can receive a respectable CRI rating while still rendering certain saturated colors poorly.

That is why retail lighting decisions should consider more than one number.

Do Not Overlook R9

R9 measures how accurately a light source renders strong red tones.

Red is not included in the group of colors used to calculate the standard CRI average, yet it appears throughout the retail environment.

It affects the appearance of:

  • Skin tones
  • Cosmetics
  • Clothing
  • Wood finishes
  • Meat and produce
  • Flowers
  • Artwork
  • Brand colors

A fixture may have a CRI above 80 while still having a weak or even negative R9 value. That can cause people and products to look pale, flat, or less appealing.

For stores where appearance matters, strong R9 performance can make a noticeable difference.

A high CRI does not guarantee good reds

Standard CRI averages a set of pastel test colors that excludes red. Ask for the R9 value separately whenever skin tones, cosmetics, produce, wood, or brand colors are part of the sale.

TM 30 Provides a More Complete Picture

TM 30 is another method used to evaluate how a light source affects color.

Instead of relying on a small set of test colors, it evaluates 99 color samples. This provides a more detailed picture of both color accuracy and saturation.

Two important measurements are included:

  • Fidelity shows how closely colors under the light match the reference source.
  • Gamut shows whether colors appear more saturated or less saturated.

A high fidelity score indicates that colors are being represented accurately. A higher gamut score can make colors appear more vivid, while a lower score may make them look muted.

The ideal combination depends on the store, the products, and the desired customer experience. A luxury boutique may prioritize natural, refined color. A vibrant athletic store may want slightly stronger saturation to create energy and visual impact.

The goal is not simply to choose the highest number. It is to choose a light source that supports the merchandise and the brand.

Color Temperature Changes the Mood

Correlated color temperature describes whether white light appears warm, neutral, or cool. It is measured in kelvin.

Warm light can make a space feel comfortable, intimate, and inviting. Cooler light can feel crisp, bright, and energetic.

Common retail choices include:

  • 2700K to 3000K for warm, relaxed environments
  • 3500K for balanced and versatile retail lighting
  • 4000K for clean, energetic, or highly detailed spaces

The correct color temperature depends on what the store sells.

Warm lighting may enhance wood, leather, hospitality areas, and luxury merchandise. Neutral lighting can work well for apparel, beauty, and general retail. Cooler lighting may suit sporting goods, electronics, automotive showrooms, and contemporary environments.

Consistency is equally important. Mixing noticeably different color temperatures can make displays feel disconnected and cause products to change appearance as customers move through the store.

Light Quality Matters in Fitting Rooms

Fitting rooms are one of the most important places for accurate, flattering illumination.

Poor fitting room lighting can create harsh shadows, distort skin tones, and make clothing appear different from how it looked on the sales floor. Even a customer who loved an item on the rack may lose confidence when viewing it under unflattering light.

The most effective fitting room lighting usually combines accurate color rendering with soft, balanced illumination around the customer.

Light coming only from directly overhead can create deep shadows on the face and body. Vertical illumination near the mirror can provide a more natural and comfortable view.

The goal is not to disguise the product. It is to help the customer see it clearly and feel confident about the purchase.

Glare Can Hide the Details You Want Customers to Notice

More light is not always better.

Excessive brightness and glare can make merchandise uncomfortable to view. Reflections may obscure product labels, glossy packaging, jewelry, screens, artwork, and glass displays.

The direction of the light matters as much as its output.

Carefully positioned track lights, recessed fixtures, linear lighting, and display lighting can highlight important features without creating distracting reflections. Proper beam angles help place the light on the product instead of in the customer’s eyes.

A thoughtful lighting layout creates visual emphasis while keeping the shopping experience comfortable.

Consistency Protects the Brand Experience

Even high quality fixtures can create problems when their color performance is inconsistent.

If one lamp appears warmer, cooler, greener, or pinker than another, the difference may be noticeable across shelves, displays, or ceiling rows. Products can appear to change color simply because they are placed under different fixtures.

Choosing LED products with reliable color consistency helps create a more polished environment.

This is especially important for stores with multiple locations. Consistent specifications help ensure that merchandise and brand colors look similar from one property to the next.

Test the Lighting With the Actual Products

Lighting specifications are valuable, but the best evaluation happens in the real environment.

Before selecting fixtures for an entire store, test the proposed lighting with the merchandise it will illuminate.

Look at products from multiple angles. Compare similar colors. Examine glossy and matte finishes. Check skin tones, packaging, signage, and important brand colors.

It is also helpful to evaluate the lighting at different times of day. Daylight entering through windows can change how electric lighting appears and may affect displays near the front of the store.

A mockup can reveal issues that are difficult to identify from a specification sheet alone.
